Praxis
(USPraxis, Inc.) was founded in 1992 as Praxis Illinois, Inc. for the purpose of making cutting
blades for stump grinders. Praxis was awarded U.S. Patent
5,034,407 for its innovative lightweight blade design. At that time the
business was located in a 5,000 sq. ft. shop in
Batavia,
Illinois.
Their first big
account was with a Swedish machinery manufacturer, which adapted the
Praxis blade to their portable concrete cutter for use as a stump
grinder. In 1994 this relationship evolved into an exclusive supply and
license agreement. The patents licensed were: USP 5,034,407, USP
5,115,845 and USP 5,365,986. In 1997 the license grant became
nonexclusive.

Seeing an opportunity to provide the industry with a new concept in
stump grinding Praxis developed its own stump machine. The blades were
redesigned to reduce weight and optimize cutting action. These
enhancements were awarded USP 5,915,430, and the walk behind stump
grinder was born (yes, we invented it). The new blades facilitated basic design changes to
what was then the industry standard and significantly lowered weight and
vibration. The net result was a stump grinder that was much easier to
operate at a lower cost of ownership.
The
initial production was a 9 hp model. The machines caught the attention
of the rental market in 1999. Sales pushed Praxis from the original
5,000 sq. ft. shop into a 25,500 sq. ft. facility in DeKalb
IL. They subsequently introduced a 13 hp machine that attracted an
even larger base of customers and distributors from around the globe.
These machines have ground down stumps up to 72" in diameter, and
although the recommended diameter is 36” the superior blade design
allows better cutting with less power. With the best weight to power
ratio these machines are clearly more effective.
In
an effort to give the organization a more national look on
January 31st, 2006 Praxis Illinois, Inc. became
USPraxis, Inc. As the industry evolves Praxis continues to innovate and develop new
cost effective solutions for their customers. On March 1st
2006 seeing a continued push for smaller more portable stump machines that
could be easily transported and used by “Do-It Yourselfers” Praxis
developed a 5 hp unit that weights only 103 pounds and fits in a trunk,
minivan, or SUV.
Moving forward Praxis will continue to innovate its product line of high
quality commercial grade stump machines while developing new
complimentary products that are deserving of the Praxis name. |
